The alternative to your journalism CV « Adam... →
“Everyone else has a CV, but not everyone has the initiative to see the new publishing opportunities in front of us all, and to start something. Launching an online magazine, for example, and building a small, loyal community around great content. Or running a series of talks or events, or making that documentary.”

futurejournalismproject: shortformblog: With these words, NPR commits itself as an organization to avoid the worst excesses of “he said, she said” journalism. It says to itself that a report characterized by false balance is a false report. It introduces a new and potentially powerful concept of fairness: being “fair to the truth,” which as we know is not always evenly distributed among the...

(via MATTER by Matter — Kickstarter) “The web is the future of journalism, but let’s be honest: the future isn’t living up to expectations. Newspapers and magazines have cut back on in-depth reporting. Gossip sites have proliferated. The web has become a byword for fast and cheap. Why isn’t it synonymous with fearless, investigative and enthralling writing? We think it can be.  ...

The Chicago News Cooperative will cease operation February 26, founder James O’Shea told his staff Friday afternoon. CNC, which has contributed four news pages a week of Chicago news to the New York Times and maintained a news-centric website since O’Shea launched it in the fall of 2009, asked the Times for financial support that would allow it to continue, O’Shea said, but the...

Before freelancing: things I did that didn’t work
jessicafurseth: I got an email recently from a young journalist who wanted advice on freelancing. This made me feel tremendously wise and sage for a moment, and then I remembered I am a rookie too and referred the writer to Catherine Quinn’s excellent book: ‘No Contacts? No Problem’. But the email exchange reminded me there is value in being honest about what something is really like, because...

Pet Peeves: pt. 1
spammymonkey: I was asked to do an interview by a first year journalism student regarding a student fee mix-up with the school and our program.   As a journalism student myself, and also an “all-around nice person” (yes, I’m really soaking up the glory here), I agreed to it.   Although the questions were fairly amateur (which is fine because it’s a complicated issue), I decided to explain...

Breaking Into the Media Boys Club
smdnyc: Good has a great article up right now, called “Boys Will Hire Boys: The Media Is Male and Getting Maler”: It’s easy to hide behind that old journalistic convention of objectivity, but when your “unbiased” hiring strategy results in the systematic underrepresentation of women, something very biased is going on. And the problem compounds itself—male workforces mean male networks and...

AS: There are a lot of careers you could say that about, but I think especially in journalism trying to balance your personal and professional life is endlessly frustrating. At the end of that war in 2006, I felt the cost of that more than I ever had. My...

[brightcove video=”1454454155001” /] A new software tool will help journalists see breaking news tweets as they are happening. The program, called Seriously Rapid Source Review, is still under development — but will act like a sieve that pull tweets from key sources currently sharing reports,…

Content Everywhere, But Not A Drop To Drink
parislemon: This morning, I woke up and read Nick Bilton’s weekly New York Times’ column. Nick is a friend and one of the best bloggers/writers/journalists out there. But with today’s column, he was way off base.  Having already said what I wanted to say about the Path situation, I debated if I should weigh in again. Then I read Nick’s column again. There’s a way to say what he wants to say,...
